Inlays are a more conservative treatment option than onlays, since they preserve more of the natural structure of the tooth. Onlays can sometimes be considered a partial crown because they replace a larger area of the tooth, including the sides and the biting surface. Both inlays and onlays are made from durable materials like porcelain or zirconia, ensuring long-lasting results that blend naturally with your other teeth.

The Process of Getting Inlays and Onlays

The process of applying inlays or onlays involves several steps to ensure a perfect fit and a long lasting restoration. First, the Rockyview Dental Care team will perform a thorough examination to assess the extent of the damage. If inlays or onlays are recommended, we will use local anesthesia to first numb the tooth. Next, we will remove the decayed or damaged portion of the tooth, clean the area and take detailed impressions using advanced digital scanning or traditional molds. These impressions will then be sent to our lab, where your custom restoration will be crafted.

While your inlay or onlay is being created, we may provide a temporary solution to keep you comfortable. Once your restoration is ready, you will return to our clinic, where the inlay or onlay will be bonded securely to your tooth. Inlays are placed into the cavity, restoring the top surface of the tooth, while onlays cover larger areas for a more extensive restoration. The final step is polishing and shaping the restoration to seamlessly blend with your natural teeth!
